Based on the Climate Resilient Infrastructure Guideline, the course provides participants with a shared language, practical frameworks and real-world examples to support planning, funding, monitoring and adapting infrastructure assets to the increasing challenges of climate change.

Participants will undertake an Action Learning Project that builds throughout the course and results in a Business Case for the integration of climate resilient materials and assets within their organisational policies and processes. Access to the CRIG for six months will be included and participants who complete the course will receive the IPWEA Climate Resilient Infrastructure Digital Badge.

Module Details

Module 1: Foundations of Climate Resilience

Before you can assess risk, choose adaptation options, or build a business case, you need to understand how Australia's climate is changing, and how those changes translate into damage and deterioration of the assets and materials you manage. This module introduces climate resilience to help you make those choices.

Module 2: Damage and the Deterioration Risk

There are seven materials that are integral to Australian infrastructure, all of which are affected by climate hazards. In this section, you'll explore how these materials respond to physical damage and chemical deterioration under climate stress, followed by six resilience qualities that define a durable asset. You'll then apply what you've learned to assess the material-level vulnerability of your own asset.

Module 3: Adaptation and Lifecycle Planning

After determining a residual Risk Rating, the next step is adaptation. This involves choosing a response that reduces a climate risk to an acceptable level over the life of the asset, and locking that response into the way the asset is planned, financed, and maintained.

Module 4: Applying the Decision Tree

The Decision Tree is a practical tool that provides structure to your climate risk assessments for infrastructure, focussing on the primary impacts of climate change on an asset in terms of usage, physical damage and chemical deterioration.

Module 4: Building Consensus and the Business Case

In this module, you'll learn to lead the organisational change that climate-resilient asset management requires, and link your technical outputs to the long-term asset performance and financial reporting that decision-makers actually use.

By completing this course, participants will identify climate change impacts and resilience options for buildings, bridges, roads, footpaths, green infrastructure, water and waste water assets, storm water assets, coastal assets and the most commonly used infrastructure materials.

Participants who complete this course will earn 3 CPD hours. These hours are calculated based on the course's structured learning activities, readings, case studies, and reflection exercises.

Cancellation:

Participants may cancel their enrolment at any time. Cancellations received prior to the commencement of the course will not incur any penalty. Cancellations received after the course has commenced will be required to pay 100% of the course fee.

Enrolment suspension and transfer:

  • Applications to suspend and transfer enrolment to the next course must be received by the course administrator before the start of Module 1.
  • Applications for suspension and transfer received after commencement of Module 1 will incur a fee equal to 50% of the course registration fee to transfer to a future course.
  • Participants who have transferred enrolment to a Course must recommence on the next available course.
  • Participants who are granted an enrolment suspension and transfer will be provided access to all modules of the subsequent Course. Any of the work completed on the eLearning portal during the initial enrolment will not be transferred to the subsequent course.

Course fee payment:

Participants must ensure course fee payments are complete prior to the commencement of the course. In the event of late enrolments, IPWEA will accept an official Purchase Order as proof of pending payment. Participants who have not paid the course fee, do not receive feedback on their assignment submissions and cannot complete the course.

Extensions:

Extensions to complete work/assignments which are due will only be given in the following circumstances:

  • Illness or injury of the candidate or his/her immediate family where the candidate is one of the primary caregivers;
  • Death or incapacity of a family member or close relative;
  • Abnormal or unanticipated work load resulting from entity restructures or severe natural weather events such as earthquakes, storms, floods.

Assignment:

Assignments must be the participant’s own work. The use of AI to complete assignments can be detected. Participants using AI to complete assignments are not demonstrating that they understand the key concepts in the course and will be asked to resubmit.

Course Closure and Finalisation:

Participants will have access to the online course environment, IPWEA eLearning platform for a reasonable period following the conclusion of the course to facilitate assignment completion.

The Climate Resilient Infrastructure Guideline provides nationally relevant, collaboratively developed, industry best practice guidance on the integration of climate risk and resilience into asset and financial management planning.

The Guideline details a range of climate hazards including higher temperatures, heatwave, frost, hail, changes in rainfall, increased storm and cyclonic intensity flooding, coastal and riverine erosion, drought, sea level rise, ocean acidification, and bushfire weather.
